Should I get IPL or a Cosmelan MD Peel for Hyperpigmentation? Treatment in Sterling Heights

Tri-County Medical Clinic

If you’re tired of looking at instances of hyperpigmentation in the mirror—freckles, dark spots, or patches in black, pink, brown, or gray—you don’t have to live with it.

The TLC Acne and Rosacea Treatment Center, a division of Tri-County Medical Clinic, sees patients every day struggling with hyperpigmentation, and helps them find relief with the Lumecca IPL, the Cosmelan Peel, or a combination of both.

But how do you know which approach will work best for you?

IPL vs. Cosmelan Peel: What’s the Difference?

The IPL and the Cosmelan Peel are completely different delivery methods of hyperpigmentation treatment. In Sterling Heights, we offer both modalities and can help you decide which will work best for you after meeting with you for an initial consultation.
Here are the 5 factors we use to determine the best hyperpigmentation treatment for your unique needs.

1. Your Skin Tone

In general, Lumecca IPL is best for lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick I-III), while the Cosmelan Peel is safe for darker complexions. In order to ensure treatment is both safe and effective for those with Fitzpatrick levels IV-VI, we may rely on the Cosmelan Peel to achieve your goals.

2. The Cause of Your Pigment

IPL effectively targets surface-level concerns such as sunspots, freckles, and age spots. The Cosmelan Peel, on the other hand, can address deeper, more stubborn areas of hyperpigmentation.

3. How Your Hyperpigmentation Manifests

Does your pigment seem to get worse in the heat or in the sun? If so, the Cosmelan Peel may be a better choice for your hyperpigmentation treatment in Sterling Heights. If the pigment doesn’t seem to change throughout the day or week, IPL may be a better option.

4. How Much Downtime You Can Take

IPL has a shorter downtime than the Cosmelan Peel, the latter of which will cause peeling and redness for about 7 to 10 days on average. If you are not able to take time away from your normal schedule, IPL may be the more convenient option.

5. Additional Concerns You Need Treated

If IPL or the Cosmelan Peel can address other concerns you have, we may recommend one over the other. For example, the Cosmelan Peel is highly effective as a melasma treatment, whereas IPL can also address rosacea and sun spots.
