What is a Chemical Peel Treatment at Troy Laser Center?
A liquid chemical solution is applied to the skin in order to slough off the top damaged layer and reveal new and fresh skin. Depending on the type and the strength of the peel, it can take up to 5 days for the sloughing to occur, revealing the new skin underneath.
Chemical exfoliation has proven very effective in the treatment and management of active acne, acne scarring , hyperpigmentation and age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, and uneven texture and large pores. At Troy Laser Center, we offer several high-quality chemical peel treatment options to remove layers of damaged skin on the face, neck, or chest and reveal a more youthful and healthy look. During your complimentary consultation, our medical aesthetician will examine your skin and make recommendations as to the best chemical peel for you, based on your skin care concerns and desired results.
The types of chemical peels offered at Troy Laser Center include salicylic acid peels, retinoic acid peels, kojic/lactic acid peels, Jessner’s 14%, and a TCA 20 % .

Depending on the type of the peel, an average chemical peel treatment can take anywhere from 15-30 min. Certain peels involve application of multiple layers, spaced about 3-5 minutes apart; the more layers, the deeper the penetration, the longer the downtime but also the better final result. After the end point of the treatment is reached, the peel is neutralized (if not self-neutralizing) and the proper post-peel ointment is applied among with a sunscreen.
Recovery time & side effects
Recovery time from the chemical peels can be anywhere from a few days to 10 days, depending on the depth of the peel. The first three days the skin can feel and look like a sunburn showing mild to moderate redness and /or swelling. The skin usually starts to slough off by day 3 , revealing new fresh and healthier layer by days 7-10. For best and quick recovery , patients should cleanse the skin with a gentle facial wash , keep it hydrated with a mild moisturizer , and protect it from exposure to UV radiation with a sunscreen (SPF 30 minimum).
For best results, series of 4-6 chemical peels , spaced 2-3 weeks apart, are recommended. Superficial chemical peels produce very subtle results and are more recommended for maintenance or as a refresher prior to an important event. Medium depth peels (such as Jessner’s 14%), due to deeper penetration, can result in moderate improvement in hyperpigmentation, control active acne, or larger pores and medium deep wrinkles.
What to Expect During My Chemical Peel Treatment at Troy Laser Center?
Here’s what to expect during a chemical peel near you.
Chemical peels, by sloughing off the damaged layers and revealing fresh and healthy skin, can be very effective in treating a multitude of skin conditions to include inflammatory acne, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines and wrinkles.
During the initial complimentary cosmetic consultation, our cosmetic physician evaluates the patient's facial anatomy and structure as well as patient's expectations and desires. Based on the outcome, recommendations are made for which technique will produce the best aesthetic results.
The chemical peel treatment at Troy Laser Center starts with cleansing of the skin where a special prepping solution is used in order to remove any leftover makeup or surface oils. Once the skin is ready, the specific chemical solution is measured out and applied to the treated skin with a 2 by 2 gauze.
As the solution starts to penetrate the skin, patients will feel slight to moderate tingling or burning sensation ( this also depends on the strength of the peel). We keep patients comfortable by using a fan or a cold air blower- the tingling or burning usually wears off within 10-20 minutes. Depending on a peel ( Jessner's 14%), multiple layers (up to 4 ) are applied every 3 to 5 minutes for an optimal results.
Once the end point is reached, a post-peel soothing ointment or a moisturizer , followed by a sunscreen, is applied. Post-treatment recommendations are reviewed to assure best possible recovery process.
Depending on the individual factors (age, overall health, social habits etc.) and daily proper skin care regimen at home , the results can last anywhere from 6 months to a year.
