Details:
What It Treats:
- Uneven tone & texture
- Sun damage
- Fine lines & deep wrinkles
- Crepey skin
- Acne scars
- Stretch marks
Procedure:
The average Helix session lasts 1 hour. However, your appointment duration can vary depending on the number and size of areas being treated. This procedure causes minimal to mild discomfort depending on the settings, and should not be painful. Your medical provider will give you protective eyewear to help ensure the safety of your vision while the laser is operating. We recommend 1 to 3 Helix sessions to achieve your maximum results. After the procedure, your medical provider will go over post-treatment care and how to get the most out of your results. They can also answer any questions you might have.
Recovery & Side Effects:
Like with procedure length, your recovery and side effects will depend on your individual treatment plan. A Helix laser treatment does not require rest, but you may like to take some social downtime as your side effects resolve. The average patient experiences 1 to 5 days of side effects. Redness and swelling, similar to a mild sunburn, are normal.
With a more intense treatment setting, you are likely to experience more swelling. It is also normal to see slight skin peeling and flaking a few days after your Helix session. We recommend avoiding makeup for these first few days. For the first week after your treatment, avoid sun exposure, as your skin will be more sensitive than normal. The length of your recovery positively correlates with the caliber of your results.
Results:
Depending on your treatment settings, the length of recovery time and the time to observe results may vary. In general, you can see noticeable improvements in your skin after the first week of recovery. Your full results will take time to develop, as skin healing from the inside out is a complex process. Most patients reach their peak results between 4 and 5 weeks after their appointment, and continue to see improvements for 3 to 4 months. With proper care, these results can make a lasting improvement in your skin health and appearance.
How does the Helix laser work?
Here’s the science behind how our Helix Laser in Sterling Heights, MI, creates such impressive resurfacing results:
The Helix laser can deliver 2 wavelengths, CO2 and 1570nm, which penetrate the skin barrier and travel deep into the dermis—the inner layer of your skin. We can administer these energies separately or simultaneously. CO2 is an ablative laser, meaning it treats your external and internal structures. It causes controlled, minor injuries within your skin to trigger your body’s natural healing process. As a result, your cells produce increased levels of collagen; collagen is the primary building block of your skin. As its levels increase, so does your skin’s quality.
The 1570nm wavelength is a non-ablative laser, meaning it only treats beneath your skin and leaves the outer layer fully intact. Like CO2, it stimulates natural healing to remodel the collagen matrix that supports your skin’s appearance and tightness. It’s ideal for those looking to avoid longer recovery times, as well as those with darker skin types.
01
Consultation
When you arrive at Tri-County Medical Clinic, we’ll begin with a complimentary cosmetic consultation. You’ll meet with our cosmetic physician, Dr. Kenneth Wolok, to discuss your candidacy for the Helix laser skin resurfacing treatment. We’ll evaluate if your medical history, current condition, and goals for treatment align with the Helix laser. Then, we’ll go over what you can expect during and after your laser procedure. At this time, we’re happy to answer any questions or speak about the concerns you may have.
02
Treatment
During your laser skin resurfacing procedure, your provider will pass the Helix handpiece over your treatment area. They may switch between modalities based on your predetermined treatment plan. Ablative laser treatment may feel like a mild snapping sensation against your skin, accompanied by a gentle warmth.
You will use protective eyewear during the session to shield your vision from the light energy. Your provider will apply topical lidocaine/tetracaine to the treatment area 1 hour prior to the procedure. The Helix laser uses innovative techniques to minimize discomfort during your session. Most patients describe the treatment as quite tolerable. If you're concerned about discomfort, we can use our Zimmer Cryo Chiller, a cooling technology, to reduce sensation during your treatment.
03
Next Steps
Following your laser procedure, we'll discuss the appropriate aftercare methods. We will instruct you on a variety of things you should and shouldn't do in the days after your appointment. We often recommend applying topical exosomes to reduce the recovery time and enhance your results. To achieve and sustain excellent results, it's important that you stick close to these instructions. If your skin's condition is more severe, we may recommend a follow-up appointment to determine if another session of Helix would be beneficial for you.

More About the Helix Laser at TLC Acne and Rosacea Center
Tri-County Medical Clinic is uniquely well-suited to a wide variety of medical and aesthetic needs. Our TLC Acne and Rosacea Center is here to support your skin journey.
The Helix laser performs 3 different treatments, each with controllable intensity settings. These treatments are called CoolPeel, FUSION, and Sultra. CoolPeel uses ablative CO2 resurfacing to enhance your skin. A high-powered light beam will heat your top layer of skin, stimulating new collagen growth. This additional collagen can help to restore your skin to a renewed, brighter state. CoolPeel is suitable for superficial fine lines, wrinkles, and sun damage.
FUSION combines ablative and non-ablative laser modalities to treat deeper concerns while allowing for quicker healing and better results. It can improve tone, elasticity, and texture on light and dark skin types. Sultra is a solely non-ablative laser treatment. Using a 1570nm wavelength, it targets deep beneath the skin to enact internal restructuring without harming the external layer of skin. It’s great for treating a variety of concerns without incurring extensive recovery time.
