Acne scarring forms when active acne lesions rupture deep under the skin, causing damage.
As the skin tries to heal and clear the acne, collagen is produced as part of the repair process. In the case of depressed acne scars such as ice-pick, rolling, or boxcar the skin is producing too little of collagen. Some of us are more prone to developing acne scars than others. People with heavy inflammatory acne ( aka painful cysts and nodules) have higher chances of developing acne scarring. Also, it is critical to get the active acne under control as soon as possible as the longer it goes untreated, the higher the chances of developing acne scars. Habitual picking and squeezing of active acne breakouts will, without a doubt, result in excess acne scars. No worries- there is hope!
About Your Treatment

Laser skin resurfacing and microneedling have both been proven in clinical trials to significantly soften and minimize the appearance of acne scars.
01
Superficial/Mild Acne Scars Treatment
The CoolPeel CO2 fractional laser is extremely effective in smoothing and reducing acne scarring without the downtime or pain associated with traditional CO2 lasers. This is a great treatment option for individuals with superficial to mild acne scarring.
02
Moderate to Severe Acne Scars Treatment
The modality of choice for the deeper acne scars is the Morpheus8 microneedling with fractional RF which can be combined with the fractional ablative CoolPeel CO2 laser for dramatic acne scarring resurfacing without lengthy downtime or much discomfort. Morpheus8 is the first and only full-body subdermal adipose remodeling device with the deepest fractional energy for exceptional collagen remodeling. The combination of the microscopic internal wounds and the deep heat from the radiofrequency waves triggers the skin into a healing mode, resulting in stimulation of new, healthy collagen.

Over time, the collagen plumps up and fills in from within, minimizing the depth and appearance of the acne scars. The newly formed collagen is ultimately responsible for the improvement in the appearance of acne scars. As with any non-invasive laser resurfacing treatments, multiple sessions are recommended for the best outcome.

How Does the Lumecca Acne Scarring Treatment Work?
TLC Acne and Rosacea Treatment Center utilizes the Hollywood Spectra Laser Peel, the fractional ablative CoolPeel CO2 Tetra laser, and the Morpheus8 microneedling with fractional radiofrequency for the treatment of acne scarring. The choice of treatment depends on the depth and severity of the scarring. For superficial acne scarring, we recommend the ablative fractional CoolPeel CO2 laser. For medium to moderately deep scars, Morpheus8 microneedling RF produces better results. In the case the scarring is very deep, we prefer to combine the power of the ablative fractional CoolPeel CO2 laser with the Morpheus8 microneedling RF within the same session for optimal improvement. Whatever the treatment of choice it is, it always involves repeated multiple sessions spaced out about 4 weeks apart.
The multiple sessions protocol aligns with the concept of stimulating collagen in the skin- a process which can take, on average, 3 to 6 months. It is the newly created collagen that fills in and plumps up the acne scarring from within while appearing smoother, softer, and less pronounced.
