What is a Chemical Peel Treatment at Troy Laser Center?
A liquid chemical solution is applied to the skin in order to slough off the top damaged layer and reveal new and fresh skin. Depending on the type and the strength of the peel, it can take up to 5 days for the sloughing to occur, revealing the new skin underneath.

During your complimentary consultation, our medical aesthetician will examine your skin and make recommendations as to the best chemical peel for you, based on your skin care concerns and desired results.

Procedure time
Depending on the type of the peel, an average chemical peel treatment can take anywhere from 15-30 min. Certain peels involve application of multiple layers, spaced about 3-5 minutes apart; the more layers, the deeper the penetration, the longer the downtime but also the better final result. After the end point of the treatment is reached, the peel is neutralized (if not self-neutralizing) and the proper post-peel ointment is applied among with a sunscreen.
Recovery time & side effects
Recovery time from the chemical peels can be anywhere from a few days to 10 days, depending on the depth of the peel. The first three days the skin can feel and look like a sunburn showing mild to moderate redness and /or swelling. The skin usually starts to slough off by day 3 , revealing new fresh and healthier layer by days 7-10. For best and quick recovery , patients should cleanse the skin with a gentle facial wash , keep it hydrated with a mild moisturizer , and protect it from exposure to UV radiation with a sunscreen (SPF 30 minimum).
Results
For best results, series of 4-6 chemical peels , spaced 2-3 weeks apart, are recommended. Superficial chemical peels produce very subtle results and are more recommended for maintenance or as a refresher prior to an important event. Medium depth peels (such as Jessner’s 14%), due to deeper penetration, can result in moderate improvement in hyperpigmentation, control active acne, or larger pores and medium deep wrinkles.
