1 in 2 Americans aged 20 and up have elevated blood pressure, according to the American Heart Association. High blood pressure is known as “the silent killer” because so many people are unaware they have it.
Making time for appointments and treatment is time consuming. We empathize with these challenges at Tri-County Medical Clinic, but we cannot overstate the importance of monitoring your blood pressure.
We perform high blood pressure monitoring in Sterling Heights at every appointment because catching it early gives you the best chance of a painless recovery.
Why Is Monitoring Blood Pressure Important?
High blood pressure can lead to kidney failure, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, and stroke. Fortunately, if monitored regularly, high blood pressure can be reversed through lifestyle changes and medication.
What Is High Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is basically what it sounds like. It’s the pressure against your vessels as blood travels around your body. There are two numbers because the pressure changes based on whether your heart is contracting or relaxed.
The top number is systolic pressure, which is when the heart is contracting. The bottom number is diastolic pressure, when the heart is at rest. Generally, 120/80 is considered normal blood pressure.
High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is when your heart is working too hard to pump your blood. There can be many factors behind hypertension, but overworking your heart regularly can cause very serious health problems.
How Is Blood Pressure Monitored?
You’ve probably had a blood pressure screening before, but if you haven’t, that’s alright. There’s a first time for everything! Blood pressure tests are quick and pain-free.
A physician secures a plastic cuff around your upper arm, and they then pump the cuff full of air until it’s tight. Shortly after, they let the air out, and your reading will be available right away.
If your numbers are outside of the normal range, we will recommend daily monitoring for the following week. Continued elevated levels will let us know it’s time to make a plan to return your blood pressure to normal.
If your blood pressure is high enough, you will receive treatment that day. Otherwise, we will keep in close touch to determine the best treatment plan for you moving forward.
