Frequently Asked Questions About Microneedling
Microneedling is becoming more and more popular for treating skin conditions such as acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, skin texture, and stretch marks with excellent results. With more power at its tip than ever before, celebrities are using this incredible procedure. But what exactly is Microneedling?
Also known as Collagen Induction Therapy, microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment procedure that involves an automated skin-needling device designed to create new collagen. The device contains nine fine needles which, ones in direct contact with the skin, create thousands of micro perforations in the epidermis and the top layer of the dermis. This process causes the release of cytokines and growth factors, leading to the formation of new collagen and elastin. As a final outcome, fine lines and wrinkles soften up, acne scarring and larger pores become much smoother/less visible, stretch marks become much softer, and overall texture improves.
What Are the Benefits of Microneedling?
Some of the known benefits of this procedure include:
- It offers an effective, minimally invasive treatment for increased facial rejuvenation
- It stimulates collagen and elastin production
- It improves the effectiveness and penetration of active ingredients in topical products
- Cost effective comparing to laser procedures
- Can treat multiple areas such as face, neck, chest, as well as abdomen for stretch marks
Is Microneedling Safe? Am I Candidate?
Microneedling is safe and minimally invasive cosmetic treatment. Since there is no heat involved like with laser procedures, microneedling is safe for use on any skin color, including Hispanic and African-American skin tones. Downtime is minimal; skin looks and feels like a mild case of sunburn for 1-2 days.
However, it is important to note that microneedling will not be appropriate for you if you:
- Have poor wound healing ability
- Have used Accutane in the past 6 months
- Have had skin radiation therapy
- Have open wounds, cuts, or abrasions
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have a skin disease (such as active herpes simplex, eczema, psoriasis)
- Have a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring.
Can Microneedling be Performed on Any Skin Color?
Unlike laser or IPL that work best with only light skin types, microneedling can work with all skin colors and types. Regardless of your skin color, microneedling is right for you.
Is Medical Microneedling Painful?
Microneedling causes minimal discomfort to begin with but to make it more comfortable, a numbing cream is applied on your skin 30 minutes prior to the treatment.
How Many Treatments Do I Need and How Often Will I Need Them?
It is important to note that the number of treatments needed is dependent on the individual and their specific skin condition. For best results, a minimum of 3 and up to 6 sessions are recommended. Treatments are performed 4 weeks apart, with most individuals seeing results after the first session.
Are There Any Risks of Post-Treatment Infections?
Provided the procedure is conducted under controlled clinical conditions, post-op infections are extremely rare.
What Should I Avoid After My Treatment?
To ensure the appropriate healing environment, treat your skin like a mild case of sunburn; avoid using topical retinoids and/or AHA/BHA and topical prescription medications 5 days prior to and 5 days post treatment. Avoid direct sun exposure; apply SPF 30 or higher 30 minutes prior to leaving the house.
Can Microneedling be Combined with Other Treatments?
Yes, as in the case of the Vampire Facial aka PRP (Protein Rich Plasma)
Microneedling can be performed simultaneously with an application of the PRP; since the microneedling pen allows for a superior penetration/absorption of the protein serum, the overall improvement is even more impressive.
In order to harvest the PRP, a sample of blood is taken from the patient and spun in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the actual protein rich serum. The serum- full of growth factors- is then applied topically to the skin with the microneedling Rejuvapen or injected for volume loss.
In addition, because the plasma being used is the patient’s own, there is little to no risk of infection or adverse reaction to the treatment.
